Wriggle Valley 21/06/24

Mid-summer’s evening in Chetnole was supposed to be in glorious sunshine but as the day progressed, more and more cloud rolled in. The toss, conducted in the Chetnole Inn, was won by Wriggle Valley who asked the Wanderers to bat. Charles was very unlucky to be adjudged LBW in the first over for no score. Ollie then put together an outstanding partnership with Shan who was attacking all around the ground. Shan retired on 35 bring Leo to the crease. After a confident start Leo (6) fell victim to the variable bounce. Nick (16) batted with Ollie before he was bowled. Skipper (16) lasted only 5 balls before one did not bounce and took leg-stump. Ollie passed his 35 with a big shot over cow-corner bringing Simon T (remember him?) and Mark (last minute replacement for injured Foz). Simon (2), Ben (0) and Big Dog (0) were bowled with Mark (8) caught after hitting a boundary. Ollie was back in, and when David (1) was bowled Shan came back. At one point a single turned into 3 when 2 sets of over-throws resulted in additional runs! Shan was caught on 39 with Ollie not out 40. 133 in 20 overs was a good return.

Ben bowled the opening batsman in the first over with David producing a similar result next over. Charles was totally unplayable on this surface and only had 1 over. Leo bowled an impressive spell taking a wicket bowled. Simon provided some fun with his leg-spin, taking 2-11 off 4. Nick was also in amongst the wickets although conceding 25 from 3. Ollie meanwhile was very difficult to get away and conceded only 5 runs from his 3 overs. At one point there was an almighty mix up with the batsmen both at the same end but somehow the Wanderers contrived to not get the run-out! There were 2 run-outs in the innings with some of the Wanderers fielding very tight. Mark struggled with his run-up so Leo came on to bowl the last over with 20 runs required. Skipper took a stumping off the last ball to hand the Wanderers a victory. Unfortunately, the scorebook had not been completed by the Wriggle scorer restricting the information available.
